The Comox Valley Road Runners were well represented among the 2000 runners competing in the 26th annual First Half Marathon held February 15, in Vancouver. The race served as the BC
Road Running Half Marathon 2015 Championships and was part of the BC Road Running Series presented by Timex. Runners were rewarded with perfect conditions on a scenic route that
included a circuit of Stanley Park Seawall in the morning sunshine. The race attracted a star studded field including Olympian Dylan Wykes who was the overall winner in an excellent time of
1:07:20. The women's first place finisher was Dayna Pihoresky in a time of 1:16:09.

CVRR had a number of podium finishes in this very competitive field. Derek Vinge strutted his stuff with the best in the province and finished in 10th place overall and an impressive
second place in the M3034 age group in a personal best time of 1:12:25. Next was speedy master Vince Brotherston who finished second in M5054 in a time of 1:16:37.
Wayne Crowe (Extreme Runners/Asics) showed he is coming back to form, finishing 3rd in M5559 in a time of 1:25:56. He was closely followed by Roger Plamondon, who missed
out on 3rd in M5054 by only 2 seconds in a time of 1:26:13. Danny Keyes ran a great race as well, finishing 8th in M5054 in a time of 1:28:44. Rounding out the CVRR team was
mega marathoner Janet Green who stopped off to run the First Half on her way to Tokyo, to run the last of the six World Major Marathons that she has to complete. She finished 3rd in F6064 in a time of 1:50:45.
The next major event for our local Road Runners is the Comox Valley Race Weekend. There will be a 5 Km Fun Run, that is open to everyone, on March 21, to celebrate the
graduation of the CVRR 5 Km Running Clinic. That evening will be the Race Weekend Banquet at the Best Western Coast Westerly, featuring renowned mountaineer, runner and
author Lindsay Elms as speaker and musical entertainment by the fabulous Tammy Fassaert, accompanied by fellow musician Blaine Dunaway. This entertaining banquet is open to
the public and tickets can be purchased online at  www.cvrr.ca/cv-half-marathon/ banquet or at Extreme Runners. To top the weekend off, Sunday, March 22 will be the Comox Valley RV
Half Marathon, where our local runners will be tested by over 500 runners from around the province in the premier race of the Vancouver Island Race Series.

With some lead runners taking the weekend off and some saving their efforts for the big race next weekend, the Comox Valley Road Runners team of 22 runners placed first as a club at the Cedar road race. Number three in the Island Series of eight races, with a 12 kilometre up and down distance, the Cedar course challenges the best of runners. CVRR pulled ahead of their arch rivals, the Prairie Inn Harriers of Saanich to gain some ground on the much larger club’s strangle hold on first place in the series. Leading the charge were two first place finishes; Roger Plamondon (M55-59) and Ken Richardson (M70-74). Rounding out the medals were Wayne Crowe with his third silver in three races, and an increasingly competitive Sheila Van Gesbergen with a bronze. A notable performance by Kevin Park (M30-34) earned him the fastest RoadRunner title for the weekend and 28th overall in a field of 382 competitors. Sam Knowles is letting them know he is back after a 5 year hiatus, posting a very respectable 1:08:15 for a seventh place in his age category (M65-69). The Road Runners are back in action next weekend at the classy Royal Roads/Hatley Castle 8k.

Twenty four Comox Valley runners competed with 480 others in the second of the Island Series races at Cobble Hill last Sunday (Jan 25th). The weather was cloudy, damp and about 10 degrees, in other words a perfect day for a fast 10 km  run. And run fast they did. First place overall, and first place in his very competitive age group (30-34) was claimed by the CVRR’s very own Derek Vinge, with an awesome time of 32:46. First place finishes in their respective age groups were also accomplished by Vince Brotherston (50-54), Roger Plamondon (55-59), Roslyn Smith (65-69) and Ken Richardson (70-74). Placing a very close second in his age group (60-64) was Wayne Crowe. Danny Keyes completed  the medals for the day with a third place finish in the 55-59 age group. Just out of the medals, but with great times, were 4th place finishes by Les Disher (60-69) and Marion Bryan (40-44) and a 5th place finish by a very delighted Sheila Van Gisbergen.

The Road Runners next Island Series challenge is the Cedar 12K taking place just south of Nanaimo on February 8th.

Friday, January 30, 2015 - 19:31

Comox Valley Road Runners had a great start to the 2015 season, as 24 club runners challenged the 8 km road race held in Saanich this last weekend. Hosted by the Prairie Inn Harriers Runners Club, CVRR athletes achieved first place in three age groups, second in two age groups and third in one more. Fastest runner from the Comox Valley was Derek Vinge, clocking 25:56 for an overall fourth place finish in a large field of 675 entrants. That’s an average speed of just under 19 kilometres per hour over 8 kilometres! Not far behind him was Vince Brotherston, who conquered the 50-54 age group with a great 27:37 time. Third for the club and fourth in his age group (55-59) was Roger Plamondon, placing 58th overall with a time of 30:46 Others placing first in their age group were Wayne Crowe (60-64) coming in at 31:06 and club president Roslyn Smith (65-69) at 36:57. Seconds were achieved by Derek Vinge (30-34) and Ken Richardson (70-74) who finished in 37:56. Marion Bryan cruised in at 33:52 for a third place in her age group (40-44).

Also, welcome to our two European guests who ran with us. Walter Grob , an apprentice cheesemaker from Switzerland, ran a very respectable 33:47 and Christian Porten, a foreign student studying at Vanier, ran a solid 42:18.

CVRR runners will regroup in two weeks for the next Island Series race on January 25 in Cobble Hill.

A team of elite masters from the Comox Valley Road Runners travelled to the Windy City to challenge themselves against 45,000 other runners at the 2014 Chicago Marathon. Chicago is known as a fast course with a number of world records being set there over the years. Race day brought almost perfect temperatures for racing, but a cool breeze negated the possibility of records falling this year. Kenyans once again dominated the race with Eliud Kipchoge winning the men's event in a time of 2:04:11, the eight fastest marathon ever run. Rita Jeptoo defended her women's title winning in 2:24:11.

The Road Runners team was captained by Wayne Crowe (Extreme Runners/Asics) who was unfortunately on the sidelines due to injury. The team dominated the age group competition, finishing second and barely missing out on first place by 0.04% for mixed teams in this huge international field. Leading the charge for the CVRR team was Les Disher who ran a stellar time and personal best of 2:56:31, 2nd in M6064. Next was Danny Keyes who shattered his lifelong goal of breaking the magical three hour barrier by running a personal best by more than ten minutes to finish in 2:58:17, 19th M5054. Edmonton native and new CVRR team member Brian Stewart had a solid race, finishing in 302:45, 14th M5559. Roz Smith showed that she firmly belongs among the best age group runners in the world, running 3:47:37, 2nd F6570. Janet Green continued to show her consistency, even after more than 220 marathons, running 3:58:22, taking 4th F6064.
