Thanks to all who placed an order for some CVRR apparel recently. Unfortunately the numbers for most items (except for TOQUES) were too low to be cost effective, so I will postpone ordering Jackets, T's, singlets, & Fizz Tanks until the Spring.

The good news is that there was plenty of interest in the Toques so I'll be ordering 50 of them. The ETA of them will be early in the New Year, so stay tuned for a future email announcing their arrival.

Hopefully there will be more interest in the Spring!!!

Clothing order Gal,

The 44th Annual Comox Nautical Days 4 Mile Road Race took place on BC Day, with over 100 finishers enjoying clear blue skies & a temperature ideal for running.

The run has been held every year since 1969 as part of the weekend’s Comox Nautical Days celebrations and is organized by Comox Valley Road Runners (CVRR). Runners start at the Town Hall and race through the residential areas of Comox adjacent to the Marina, with the finish along Comox Avenue at the site of the former Lorne Hotel.

The overall male & female winners turned out to be a repeat of last year, with Craig Odermatt finishing in a time of 20:50 and Melissa Ross in 23:17. Every age group from under 12 to over 70 was represented with Molly Keyes, aged 10 years, being this year’s youngest runner. Another double occurred with both the current & past Presidents of CVRR winning their age groups, Roz Smith (F60-69) in 30:50 & Wayne Crowe (M50-59) in 24:15 respectively.

CVRR Race Director Graham Garner said ‘This is a great family event & everyone seemed to be having a really good time. To enable the race to go ahead safely, it requires 40 people and I am extremely grateful to our club members, their families & friends for giving up their time & making it possible. I would also like to thank the generosity of our sponsors.

Please support the local stores who supported the race, who are Extreme Runners, Medicine Shoppe, Canadian Tire, Coastal Credit Union, Avenues Restaurant, Little Caesars Pizza, Benino Gelato, Toscanos Restaurant, Blackfin Pub, Longlands Golf Course, Blue Heron Books & Visual Sound & Audio. Additionally, Quality Foods, Water Pure & Simple & Tim Hortons supplied the food & refreshments. A special thanks goes to the race’s main sponsor, Jim Smiley of ReMax Realty.

On a rare, hot Canada Day, 195 participants lined up at the corner of 5th and Woods in Courtenay for the annual 5th Street mile, sponsored by “the Joint” Physiotherapy Clinic and organized by the Comox Valley Road Runners (CVRR). Brimming with enthusiasm, the field ranged from the previous winner, Scott Commandeur, down to moms and dads with their families. Many dressed in red and white in honour of the day, proudly holding on to small Canadian flags as they awaited the 10 o’clock start.

The race itself went without a hitch. With an RCMP cruiser spearheading the charge, flanked by the riders of the Comox Valley Cycling Club (CVCC), the crowd was warned well in advance of the oncoming runners. First across the finish line again was Scott Commandeur, followed by Robin Poirier and Noah Lewis for second and third overall.

Age category medals were awarded as follows. In the 9 years and under category for boys, Kieran Ho took the gold, Jack Coley the silver and Nick Lineger the bronze. For the same age group in girls, Hayley Chang was first, Meghan Lineger second, and Quinn Smits finished third. For the 10 to 14 year olds, Keir Shonavek, Danny Yeo and Gabe Shonavek received gold, silver and bronze respectively for the boys while Kayla Kalhus, Lizzie Gummer and Sequoia Bridges took the honours for the girls. The 15 to 19 year age category for boys had the fastest runner, Scott Commandeur, followed by Noah Lewis and Nicolas Toupin. The girls in this age group were led by Choe Gummer first, Savannah Glennie second and Nicole Adebar third. Crossing the finish line first for the men’s 20 and above age group was Robin Poirier, followed closely by Conor Buchanan and then Simon Coley, while premiere runners for the women were Elita Rahn, Melissa Decker and Marion Bryan in that order.

Those present at the finish line will be pleased to note that the gentleman who had the medical emergency is in the hospital and doing fine, thanks to the timely intervention of experienced bystanders and then professional ambulance paramedics.
As well as our event sponsor, “the Joint” Physiotherapy, CVRR would also like to thank the July 1st Committee, the City of Courtenay, Courtenay RCMP, the CVCC, Active Comox Valley, Thrifty Foods, Quality Foods, a host of Courtenay businesses including the DCBIA (Downtown Courtenay Business Improvement Assoc.) and our enduring club sponsor, Extreme Runners, for supporting this popular yearly event.

The next local race will be the Comox Nautical Days 4-mile Foot Race on BC Day, August 1st. Registration takes place at Comox Town Hall from 8:00 to 8:45. The race start is at 9:00 sharp. Be sure to get out and get involved in this event as a runner, volunteer, or spectator. More information is available at
